Today I made my first yaki soba stirfry (inspired by Ngoc's Cooking Cute website). It really is a perfect bento meal. The entire stirfry process took me less than 10 min...not counting chopping the veggies, and the sauce that came with the packet is reminiscent of a slightly sweeter lo-mein sauce. I was worried at first about stirfrying since I don't have a traditional wok...mine is non-stick Americanized version with less sloping sides...but found that as long as I kept the heat on high and used two wooden salad spoons to continuously toss the ingredients everything worked out fine. I included chopped carrots, broccoli rabe, sugar snaps, mushrooms, and pieces of sliced beef in the mix and reserved some of the broccoli rabe and sauteed them with oyster sauce to see how it would work as a side dish. Not bad, but though I'm fond of some bitter veggies (bitter melon for instance) I find that the taste of broccoli rabe is one that I can take or leave. Since I'm on prednisone right now, I made sure and shoved as much food as my bento could possibly hold. The pred makes me ravenous and I didn't want to be stuck eating nasty cafeteria pizza out of desperation. In the other half of my Happy Hare box I placed a wonderful little fruit salad made from tossing sliced strawberries, kiwi, and whole blueberries with a little honey. As an unexpected bonus, after I destemmed and sliced my strawberries, I found that they all resembled little minature hearts...quite appropriate considering the upcoming holiday. Wish I could have taken a picture, but I was running late and my camera batteries weren't recharged yet. Bummer. On the plus side, my meal was very filling and I didn't once think about nasty, greasy pizza...until it was time to go home...it was then that my willpower broke down and we made a little side trip to McDonald's.
